MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Democrat Mary Burke has tapped $400,000 of her own money in the opening months of her campaign for governor on her way to raising $1.8 million through the end of 2013.

Burke's campaign on Thursday released the preliminary figures. A final report is due on Jan. 31.

The numbers are impressive for Burke, who didn't officially enter the governor's race until Oct. 7. They are identical to what Gov. Scott Walker raised over the same time period in 2009 during his run for governor.

That year, the Democrat Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett raised just $750,000.

Walker has proven himself to be a strong fundraiser, tapping deep pocketed national donors during the 2012 recall campaign. A spokesman for Walker did not immediately return a message seeking comment on Burke's numbers.
