TOWN OF CAMPBELL, Wis. (WEAU) – Police are trying to figure out what caused a school bus to go off the road, and run into a tree near the Mississippi River.

It happened in the Town of Campbell, near La Crosse, on Thursday morning.

Town of Campbell Police Chief Tim Kelemen says a 78-year-old man was driving the school bus west on Goddard Street near Lakeshore Drive at about 10:20 a.m. The bus didn’t follow a curve in the road, and went over an embankment instead. It hit a telephone pole, and would have likely gone into the river if it hadn’t hit a large tree after that.

The driver was only a few blocks away from a school at the time, and was supposed to pick students up. Nobody else was on the bus when it happened. The bus driver was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure. Nobody was hurt.
