COMMUNITY FIRST: Local girl wins statewide spelling bee

By  |

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) – A local Boys & Girls Club member is a winner of a statewide virtual spelling bee.

The girl, named “Ashleigh P.” in a news release, correctly spelled the word “airborne” to win a traveling trophy and a Kindle Fire in her division of the Festival Foods Spelling Bee. Ashleigh is a member of the Boys & Girls Club of the Greater Chippewa Valley, Mary Marquart Center in Eau Claire. Another member of that center, “Emily C.,” participated in the spelling bee, but was eliminated without placing. The girls had qualified for the statewide spelling bee by qualifying at the local level in early May.

The Boys & Girls Club says both girls displayed confidence and bravery during the competition.
