Car recovered from back waters of Mississippi River

ALMA, Wis. (WEAU) – A sheriff’s department says it will issue traffic tickets in an incident where a man drove off the highway, and his car ended up going into the back waters of the Mississippi River.

The Buffalo County Sheriff’s Department says Blaine Van Stevens, 22, of Medford, fell asleep at the wheel as he was driving north on State Highway 25 on Wednesday. His car crossed over the center line, then went over a large embankment. Van Stevens says he woke up as the car went over large rocks, and then into about six feet of water east of Wabasha, MN. He says he had his windows open and crawled out of a window. He then swam to the embankment, when back to the highway, and flagged down a driver for help.

Van Stevens was not hurt. Crews restricted traffic on highway 25 to one lane for about an hour while they recovered the car.
