Challenge hopes to keep kids learning this summer

CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis. (WEAU)- Summer break is just weeks away for school kids around the Chippewa Valley but for kids at one elementary school the learning won't stop when the year comes to a close.

Wednesday Halmstad Elementary in Chippewa Falls launched its summer learning challenge with a kickoff picnic for its students. The school says the challenge asks kids to complete at least 50 different activities that involve learning, art and healthy living.

The hope is the challenge will help kids retain information they learned in school this year and avoid what's known as the "brain drain".

“We really want kids to be learners during the summer. We want them to read, do math, stay physically fit and then be creative,” Halmstad teacher Sherry Jasper said.

If kids complete the challenge by the end of the summer they'll get to pick a free book in the fall. Kids are also entered into a raffle to win educational prizes.
