EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- Five days before Christmas and Golf Road in Eau Claire is where the holiday shoppers flock to in Eau Claire. But on the other side of town, others are stopping in and doing some Christmas shopping locally.
"I just came down here and was Christmas shopping looking for some Christmas stuff for my friends," said Sara Hansen.
"I like to shop in the local stores when possible," said Rick Robicahud.
Both, spending part of their nights in Tangled Up in Hue, which sells items hand-made by about 150 different artists.
"We've been selling quite a few dish towels and candles," said Kevin Szymankski who works at the store.
He says business has been very steady this December. Aaron Brewster, who was also working at the store, says it is all about location.
"We're right by the bus transfer center, there's lot of restaurants right here," he added.
Over at That's Adorable, December has been slower because of the cold weather.
Beth Schwartz says the weather has dampened sales this holiday season - they are down at least 40% from last Christmas.
She sells clothing for young kids and says this month it was not ideal to take children outside. But already on Friday, things are beginning to bounce back.
"Friday was actually busier than this week or the last two weeks, so I'm expecting Saturday and next Tuesday to be real busy," she said.
While most of the holiday traffic has been and will be near the mall, there is also increasing shopping traffic online.
The latest National Retailers Federation survey says 50% of Americans are planning on doing the rest of their Christmas shopping online. But the businesses we talked with in downtown Eau Claire say the web is not necessarily a threat.
Szymanski says Tangled Up in Hue has already started using the web to sell. Schwartz says she knows her niche and for her it is all about staying local.
"It's not something I'm ready to do yet, you still get customized local things in our store that you can't get anywhere else," she added.
