CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis. (WEAU) -- The Chippewa County Board of Supervisors had its first reading of a proposed wheel tax for thousands of eligible vehicles.

County Administrator Frank Pascarella said it's to help cover a deficit in the county's winter maintenance account. The board heard the proposal Tuesday night. The $10 tax would be added to the registration fee for cars or light trucks. He says nearly 53,000 vehicles in the county would fall into that category. Pascarella said the move would generate more than $580,000 for the account each year.

The proposal will be voted on September 9. If approved, it will go into effect January or February of 2015.
