Chippewa Falls veterans home '95 percent' complete as Feb. opening approaches

CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wisc. (WEAU) - A new home for 72 veterans is almost ready to open after years of planning and construction.

With the opening date of the Wisconsin Veterans Home at Chippewa Falls skilled nursing home just three months away, crews continue to stock equipment; in a building that they said they're proud to be a part of.

A seven-year project, funded by federal grants and state loans, is closing in on its finish line as home draws closer to its Feb. 1 opening date.

"We have fireplaces. The members have covered porch areas, the furnishings, the coffee bar, all of the therapy spaces; this is truly the latest and greatest in design services. I've not seen a facility as well appointed, as well equipped and as technologically advanced as this one is," the home's commandant Mark Wilson said. "I'd put it right at about 95 percent. But that last five percent is very important because it deals with our access systems, security... All of those systems need to be tested and then we need to train the operators on those very advanced systems."

"We're accepting deliveries, just about daily, different types of equipment," Terry Einerson, an interim plant ops manager and veteran, said.

"Doing some exterior landscaping work, and just some minor trim and painting touchups," Job Superintendent for Miron Construction Mark Russell said.

When it's completed, former servicemen and women and their families will have new home to battle their ailments in comfort.

"Very proud to be able to build something for the veterans like this. This facility will long outlast me," Russell said.

"I'm a veteran and I've always said I never want to get to a point in my life where I had to be in a long term care center. If I did, this would be my choice," Einerson said.

There are only two other homes like it in the state.
