NEW INFORMATION: Chippewa River 1.5 feet below the flood stage

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (CITY OF EAU CLAIRE FLOOD UPDATE 5/22)--This morning, the Chippewa River Gauge at Grand Avenue read 771.5, 1.5 feet below the flood stage of 773. This is approximately a 1.8 foot jump from yesterday afternoon.

The National Weather Service is currently forecasting a projected crest to reach elevation 773.0 this evening, which is flood stage. The actual flow rate and river stage may vary depending on precipitation over the next several days and the operations of the various Hydro-electric Projects upstream. Upstream gauges appear to be holding steady or rising at this time.

Portions of Owen Park and Riverview Park have flooded. The Chippewa River Trail is currently inundated behind Hobbs Ice Arena, behind the Haas Fine Arts Center, at the Farwell Street underpass, at the Madison Street Underpass, and at the Lake Street underpass.

At the currently projected crest elevation, the Chippewa River Trail at the Water Street underpass will be flooded. Water may reach the Owen Park Tennis Courts and the horseshoe driveway.

Extreme caution should be exercised around the activities of boating, canoeing, kayaking, shore-side fishing, tubing, swimming, or wading. Hazards involving high water levels, strong currents, floating or submerged wood debris or trees and invisible pilings are present on the Chippewa River today. Individuals choosing to recreate in the Chippewa River at any time should always exercise caution and pay special attention to safe water recreational recommendations.

The NWS is currently forecasting a projected crest to reach elevation 772.8 on Tuesday evening May 21st, approximately the flood stage. The actual flow rate and river stage may vary depending on precipitation over the next several days and the operations of the various Hydro-electric Projects upstream. Upstream gauges appear to be rising at this time.

At the currently projected crest elevation, water may reach the lower levels of the Chippewa River Trail, behind Hobbs Ice Arena, behind the Haas Fine Arts Center, at the Farwell Street underpass, at the Madison Street Underpass, The Water Street underpass and at the Lake Street underpass. Water may also reach the Owen Park Tennis Courts and the horseshoe driveway.

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) – The Chippewa River in Eau Claire is expected to crest just below flood stage later this week.

A flood update on the city’s website says the National Weather Service predicts that it will crest at 767 feet on Thursday. That’s about six feet below flood stage. As of Monday afternoon, the river was at nearly 764 feet.

The city says the Chippewa River Trail behind Hobbs Ice Arena and the Haas Fine Arts Center will flood at the projected elevation. It asks people to be aware and be careful when using trails near the rivers.
