We are learning more about an internal investigation involving the Chippewa County Jail and Chippewa County Sheriff's Department. WEAU filed an open records request to learn more about what happened.
According to the released records, it started in July when Sheriff Jim Kowalczyk and deputy Jeff Hanzlik were on an extradition trip. During that time, documents show Hanzlik told the sheriff that a jailor had planted marijuana on an inmate in the 90's.
A couple weeks later, an e-mail notification about the investigation was sent out. Hanzlik was one of the people who got it and the report says she was angry after reading it.
The next morning an envelope was found under jail adminstator Captain Arthur Crews door. It was a note about jail morale being low and mentioned the investigation. It was signed "several employees."
Then, that week, an administrative assistant at the jail says Hanzlik asked her how to address an envelope from his computer and printer. On August 22nd, an envelope was delivered to County Board Supervisor Linda Bateman.
It had a copy of the investigation e-mail, along with a note that read: "The deputies are tired of this. We will talk and tell all. This might be the big one and the sheriff and others will go down this time. Drop this investigation and leave us alone or many will go."
A few days later, the case is turned over to an outside investigator. Hanzlik was interviewed twice in September. A discipline report, filed later that month, says Hanzlik lied during the interview, saying he did not mail the letter to Bateman and gave false information about the note put under Captain Crews' door.
The internal documents conclude Hanzlik was the one who put the note under the door and sent the other to Bateman. He was suspended for 45 days after the investigation closed in September. He is now back on the job.
We called Hanzlik today but did not hear back. Sheriff Kowalczyk and Captain Crews declined to comment.
