Cold, short supply drive higher Wis. propane costs

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Wisconsin residents are bundling up and watching their money go out the door as propane prices skyrocket.

High demand during the cold weather coupled with depleted supplies from fall corn-drying and pipeline problems have combined to drive up prices across the country. According to the latest federal data, residential prices in Wisconsin averaged $2.30 per gallon on Jan. 20, up 13 percent from Dec. 16.

Gov. Scott Walker's office says 250,000 Wisconsin residents rely on propane for heat.

Walker began issuing orders in October lifting hour limits for truckers to expedite propane shipments. But industry analysts say supplies are so depleted trucks have to fill up directly from pipelines, slowing delivery.

The governor has called a meeting with propane industry leaders on Monday to discuss the situation.
