COLFAX, Wis. (WEAU) It's been a year of rebuilding for the Colfax School District, after an EF-1 tornado ripped through the village this summer, causing significant damage.
That's why all of us here at WEAU and our friends at Gordy's County Market are pleased to present our October "Schools Rule" contest winner to the Colfax School District.
Seeing the smiles and energy of the Colfax Elementary students, you'd never know an EF-1 tornado ripped through their school this summer, tearing apart its grounds, causing $1 million worth of damage.
"As a parent, it was kind of devastating. I have little boys that play T-ball, the T-ball fields were gone at the time... Insurance covers everything, but insurance doesn't replace memories that were made there," explains Kristen Hiitola, a Colfax parent who has four kids at the school.
That's why Hiitola nominated Colfax for our "Schools Rule!" contest.
"It was just an opportunity to give back," says Hiitola.
"This school has gone through a lot in the last couple of months with the tornado and there were a couple of other things the school had to persevere through and they did it," adds Gordy's Guru Matt Selvig.
Selvig and WEAU 13 News anchor Nikki Junewicz were thrilled to present the kids with $3,000 in Box Tops for Education, courtesy of General Mills.
The money will be used to put new Google Chromebooks in the hands of the young students.
"The Google Chromebooks, first of all, we don't have any in our elementary school at all or our school district for that matte,r and the size of them and what they can do are going to greatly benefit our elementary students," says Colfax Superintendent Bill Yingst.
"Having a Google Chromebook or tablet would allow our students much more access to the world around them, some of our students don't have the opportunity to leave our small town of Colfax and sometimes tablets are the only way for them to get to see what's in the outside world," says Jeannett Kiekhafer, a 4th grade teacher at Colfax.
We're taking applicants for November's winner right now.
