A few college students we talked to at UW-Eau Claire say they haven't heard much about the Voter ID Bill, but they say at face value, it sounds like a good idea.

“I think it's probably a good thing, to at least show that you are who you say you are instead of having someone representing you or falsifying you and stealing your vote,” says new UW-Eau Claire transfer student Eric Wisz.

The bill would require each voter to show a valid photo ID with their current address on it.

“That I don’t actually have,” says Wisz. “I think it could make it difficult, especially for college students and those who move a lot.”

Representative Kathy Bernier says she pushed for the bill to allow for some college IDs to be used at the polls.

“It has to be unexpired, have a picture on it, and a signature on it,” she says.

But to issue the signature and expiration date on the IDs, Mike Rindo with the university says it could cost UW-Eau Claire more than $100 thousand.

“It's $10 per ID. We have 11,500 students. It's about $115,000 every time. That adds up to a significant amount of money,” says Rindo.

Senator Kathleen Vinehout says even with student IDs being allowed, it's still voter disenfranchisement.

“Having to have this re-issued every two years puts a burden on the college and the university system,” she says.

The university says it's waiting to hear more details of the bill before changing its policy.

Governor Walker says he plans on signing the bill into law on Wednesday, but the law wouldn't go into effect until 2012.
