CORNELL, Wis. (WEAU) Thursday WEAU and our friends at Gordy's County Market were pleased to present the first Schools Rule contest winner!
Thanks to General Mills Box Tops for Education, every month we select one school in our area to win $3,000 for new playground equipment, musical instruments, technology upgrades... whatever they choose!
For the month of July, that lucky school is Cornell Elementary.
The money will be used for new leveled reading books for kindergarten students. They can take them home to read with their parents, and improve their reading skills and vocabulary.
Teacher Erica Ruf, who submitted the entry for Cornell, says she was thrilled to find out her school was selected.
"I was pretty excited I just saw it on the news one night and wrote something and sent it in and I was really surprised that we got it, but I'm so happy though," says Ruf.
She says there is a great need for skill-specific books for kids.
"A lot of kids have books at home but maybe not at their reading level so in kindergarten we read a lot of books that are easier or shorter and they go through those pretty fast and you don't always have a lot of those at home, you have a lot of the longer stories," explains Ruf.
We're taking applicants for August's winner right now.
