Curling Championship kicks off in Eau Claire

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. Eau Claire welcomed some of the best female curlers to the area Thursday for the 2014 USA Curling Senior Women's National Championship.

Practice rounds began Thursday morning at nine at the Eau Claire Expo Center, with the six-game round robin tournament beginning at 1 PM.

The Championship will continue throughout the weekend with tiebreaker games, if needed, being played Sunday afternoon.

The co-chair of the event says this is the first national event being held in Eau Claire, and says teams from across the country come to participate.

"I know we have a few that are past national champions, so it's neat to have them here and at our club, and just promote the sport of curling, it's wonderful. This is a senior event, so it's all 50 and over, and it just shows that you can curl at all ages, it's wonderful," Amy Vreeman said.

Vreeman says the public is welcome to come watch at any time during the event. She says the winning team will be nominated to Team USA to compete at the 2014 World Seniors Championship in April in Dumfries, Scotland.
