Cutting cooling costs

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WEAU) -- As the temperatures rise, you may be tempted to turn down the AC, but that can cost you.

Xcel Energy said you should set the temperature at 78 degrees.

It also recommends setting it to 85 when you aren’t at home.

Xcel said installing a programmable thermostat can help you save up to 12 percent.

Xcel recommends treating your cooling unit a lot like you would treat your furnace during the winter.

“Have it checked out by a certified technician before the cooling season, pay attention to changing you filter once a month during the cooling season,” said key account manager Rob Sturgis.

Using fans also helps to run your cooling system more efficiently.
