Cyber Monday: New mobile scams to watch out for

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- More and more people are choosing to check off their holiday list this year from the comfort of their own home.

Cyber Monday marks the biggest online shopping day of the year.

But with technology evolving with tablets, iPhones and other smartphones, experts say you've got to be careful when you fire up your devices.

Although holiday means a time to spread cheer and shop for many, for others, its viruses and malware that they're choosing to spread.

"It is a lot more common this time of year because a lot more people are spending money online so you got to be careful with whatever you do," says Daniel Lehman, a service technician at RAM Technologies in Eau Claire.

And with more people going mobile, there are a slew of new scams to be aware of. Tech savvy shoppers are now turning to mobile apps to do their holiday shopping. Experts say that's a breeding ground for cybercriminals.

"There's so many great apps out there. You can find an app for just about anything. People will take advantage of that and they'll leak some malicious software through the apps so you'll want to read reviews and stuff like that for each app you download as well," says Lehman.

There are also antivirus software you can download for both Apple and Windows devices.

"Most antivirus programs, whether you have Norton or McAfee or AVG whatever it might, be most of those companies make a mobile antivirus that you can put on your phone or on your tablet and those are great," says Lehman.

What about social media? You've seen those holiday gift scams, asking you to "share," "like," "click here," for your chance to win a free iPhone or other hot holiday gift.

"Those are a big one because those accounts get hijacked very easily. and it'll just start spamming the friends list on Facebook and stuff like that so it’s one of those things that you just got to think about it, is this something that my friend would actually say," says Lehman.

Lehman says it's important to be careful, do your research and watch what you click while you do your Cyber Monday shopping.
