MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The U.S. Department of Justice says the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction must do more to assist disabled students participating in the school voucher program.

The American Civil Liberties Union on Thursday released the DOJ letter which had been sent to the state on April 9. The letter is in response to a complaint filed in 2011 by the ACLU and other advocacy groups saying the voucher program in Milwaukee discriminated against disabled students.

The DOJ says in the letter that the state "must do more to enforce the federal statutory and regulatory requirements that govern the treatment of students with disabilities who participate in the school choice program.

A DPI spokesman says the DOJ letter is being reviewed.
