NEW INFORMATION: DOT: Avoid travel in area unless "absolutely necessary"

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- The Wisconsin State Patrol says it has responded to several crashes on the interstate. One is west of Foster, about seven miles east of the U.S. Highway 53 exit at Eau Claire in the westbound lanes of I-94. It's resulted in traffic backups. Another crash near the State Highway 93 exit has also resulted in a traffic backup.

The agency again recommends putting off travel in the area until weather conditions improve.
EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- The Department of Transportation is urging drivers to avoid traveling in the area unless its "absolutely necessary."

The department made the announcement on Tuesday morning. It says the state patrol has responded to several slide-ins and crashes. Crews have been plowing state highways most of the night and will continue during the day Tuesday, but they're having a tough time keeping up with the snow and blowing snow.

A Winter Storm Warning continues for many area counties. If you have to travel, the department suggests checking road conditions by calling 511 or clicking on the related link on this story.
