Oh deer! Buck smashes through UW-Stout building

MENOMONIE, Wis. (WEAU) -- A local college campus is cleaning up after a destructive deer.

The big buck ran into a building at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, causing thousands of dollars in damage and lots of buzz around campus.

Just after 4 p.m. Wednesday, students at UW-Stout saw an unusual sight, a dog chasing a deer through campus.

“I just thought this is the strangest thing. Only in Wisconsin would that happen,” said Katherine Kenner, a UW-Stout student.

Desperately trying to escape the dog, the buck took a strange escape route, breaking through a window at the Vocational Rehabilitation Building.

After crashing through the window, the deer ran down a hallway and into an office, giving workers a surprise they’ll never forget.

“I stood up in the back area here and I saw an eight point buck run through our office. At that point I think I said ‘Everybody stay where you are’,” said Stout employee Nancy Kingsbury.

Sharon Cook said she looked up from her work to see a buck dripping in blood staring at her.

“I'm sure I had the deer in the headlights look when I looked up and saw the deer looking at me,” Cook said.

After bleeding all over the floor, the deer ran back into the hallway.

He soon made an amazing escape through the front automatic doors.

Police followed a trail of blood through campus but the deer is still on the lam.

This the first time anything like this has happened at Stout.

“I was surprised but I wasn't shocked. We have a lot of deer in this area,” said Doug Mell, UW-Stout’s Executive Director of Communications.

Crews continued to cleanup blood and glass Thursday.

Mell said the deer's destructive visit will cost the university around $5,500.

He said officials are also looking for the pooch that started it all.

“Keep your dogs on a leash so they don't chase deer into buildings,” Mell said.

People in the building are already making light of the once-scary situation.

“Wondering if we should put in a purchase order for some orange clothing,” Cook said.
MENOMONIE, Wis. (AP) -- Authorities at the University of Wisconsin-Stout say a deer crashed through a window into a building this week, causing about $5,500 in damage. One staffer was bruised when he jumped out of its way, but no one was seriously hurt.

Officials at the Menomonie school say the eight-point buck was being chased by a dog Wednesday afternoon when it jumped through a window of the Vocational Rehabilitation building. The deer scrambled down a hallway before running back outside through a set of automatic doors.

Stout spokesman Doug Mell says authorities tried to track it as it ran through campus but they lost it when the blood trail ended.

He says there was a lot of blood. The damage estimate includes the cost of cleaning the blood and repairing the window.
