Deer drive shooting in Pierce County believed to be accidental

ELLSWORTH, Wis. (WEAU) -- Investigators believe the shooting of a hunter in Pierce County Wednesday morning was an accident.

The Pierce County Sheriff's Office says it took a report of a hunter that had been shot during a deer drive just before 8 a.m. Wednesday. Deputies responded to a farm field near the intersection of County Road CC and 150th Avenue near Maiden Rock. They say someone in a hunting party with Tad Eggenberger, 45, of rural Ellsworth hit him with a stray bullet while shooting at a deer. Crews treated Eggenberger at the scene. He was then flown to a St. Paul hospital with unknown injuries.

The sheriff's office says its preliminary finding is that the shooting was an accident, but that it's still investigating.
