ONALASKA, Wis. (WEAU) -- While health insurance may be required under the Affordable Care Act, dental insurance isn’t.
Greg Skemp who’s the sales and marketing director for Gundersen Health Plan, said that’s because dental insurance isn’t considered to be part of the minimum essential coverage.
Insurance companies also aren’t required to provide dental insurance as long as there’s a stand alone dental carrier in a county.
A stand alone dental carrier is a provider solely selling dental insurance.
“In effect, you don’t have to purchase it as an American citizen and as an insurance company as long as there’s somebody else selling it you don’t have to offer it,” said Skemp.
Skemp said the best way to find out if there’s a stand alone dental carrier where you live is to go on the Affordable Care Act’s Website.
The health care reform law goes into effect on January 1.
