HUDSON, Wis. (WEAU) – Deputies say the four-year-old who was killed Tuesday near Star Prairie was run over by a truck as his father was plowing snow.

On Wednesday, the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Department identified the victim as Collin Fitzgerald.

“This is one of the most tragic events that anyone could ever have to deal with,” St. Croix County Sheriff John Shilts said. “This is an accident by all accounts, and our thoughts and prayers go out to the Fitzgerald family.”

Deputies say his father, Daniel Fitzgerald, was going to plow the driveway of the family home on 238th Avenue. Collin had asked to play in a snow fort that his parents had built for him. Daniel pulled his pickup truck partially into the garage. He backed up, using his plow to pull snow from the front of the garage. That’s when he noticed Collin was hurt. Nobody else was home when it happened.

Daniel called for help immediately and tried to save Collin, but investigators say he had massive head injuries from being run over by the truck. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
