Little girl found dead in Burnett County

Danbury, Wis (WEAU) - The body of a little girl missing since Tuesday evening was found just a few yards away from her home.

Investigators say around 7 p.m. Tuesday, 3-year-old Reena Mae WIlliams wandered off from her home in Danbury.

Investigative teams and volunteers launched a massive search effort.

At a news conference Wednesday evening, new details were released.

Search teams found Reena's body about 25 yards from her home in a canal.

"Approximately two and a half to three feet deep," said Sheriff Dean Roland.

It's an area her family launched boats into the water.

Deputies say the family dog was with the girl leading up to the disappearance and returned wet a while later.

That gave investigators a hint as to where the girl might have been.

Shortly before 5 p.m., search crews found her body in the water.

The investigation remains open, but no criminal intent is believed at play.

Reena's father was the last person to see her about 90 minutes before she went missing.

Diana Naylor said she and a neighbor found Reena wandering barefoot earlier Tuesday evening about a mile from her home, meaning the girl had left the home multiple times that day before she went missing.

"Nobody was even looking for her. Then it happened a half hour later. How can it happen twice in one evening?" said Naylor who along with many others are shaken by the incident.

Investigators have drained the canal where the little girl was found dead.

"We are looking for any evidence that can help us in this investigation," said Roland.

Around 100 volunteers and multiple agencies, including the FBI and Wisconsin Department of Justice came together to find the girl.

"You had to think, what would you do if you were 3? And we would check underneat leaves and stuff like that," said one of the young volunteers at the site, Bailey Woodford.

Her friend Kaitlyn Moser who is from Danbury said the tragedy brought the community together and they did what they could.

Even Reena's mom came out to thank the community.

"I just want thank everyone for helping out for the generous offers to try to locate my daughter. I appreciate everything this community has done in the area," said Jenna Danish who only had the one statement to offer as of Wednesday night.

Meanwhile, after an entire day of searching, rescuers say they are also shaken up by what happened to little Reena who had her whole life ahead of her.

"This is a child. This is a child with a future," said Roland.

An autopsy is scheduled in the coming days.
