Search continues but scaled back for missing elderly man

CHIPPEWA COUNTY, Wis. (RELEASE FROM SHERIFF'S DEPT.)-- Update Search for missing person Adolf Koutny

The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office continues to search for Koutny age 83, however has scaled back it’s operation from the extensive search conducted Thursday 08/29 and Friday 08/30.

On both Thursday and Friday of last week 20 searchers each day from the Cornell Fire Department, Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office and three different private dog handlers searched and area of 160 to 180 acres in the Town of Arthur in the immediate area of Koutny’s residence.

The canine search produced very little trace of Koutny, the ground search was assisted by an aircraft from the Wisconsin State Patrol to check open areas and cropland. The wooded areas as indicated by the land owner and friends of Koutny where he would go to pick berries and mushrooms yielded no results.

All indications remain that Koutny is in the immediate area as he has no vehicle and depends on friends and neighbors in the area to get around. Koutny may have been missing since Saturday August 24th from mail and other items located at the residence.

The Sheriff’s Office was first notified on Thursday afternoon August 29th when there was a request by neighbors to check on his welfare as they had not heard from him for several days.

The scaled back search operations consist of working with adjacent land owners and accessing areas extending beyond the 160 – 180 acres.

The initial search operations encountered heavy underbrush and difficult terrain due to excessive vegetation. As the foliage decreases better access in the next few weeks should help in the search efforts.

No foul play is suspected in the matter.

The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department will resume their search Friday for a missing elderly man from the rural Cornell area.

On Thursday 08/29/2013 around 3PM neighbors of Adolf Koutny called the Sheriff’s Office asking we check on him as they have not heard from him for several days.

Deputies found no one at the residence although mail and other items have not been taken care of for approximately four days.

It is believed Koutny age 83 left this residence on foot. Search parties from the Cornell Fire Department, Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office and a private canine handler from Barron County assisted in the search.

The search will resume in the area of Koutny’s residence 28334 155th Ave in the Town of Arthur later Friday morning.
