Diary at issue in Wausau dog-torture case

WAUSAU, Wis. (AP) -- A judge hearing a dog-torture case in Marathon County is expected to decide next week whether excerpts from the defendant's diary will be admissible at trial.

A Daily Herald Media report (http://wdhne.ws/19p3NyR ) says 21-year-old Sean D. Janas of Wausau is charged with mistreating an animal and causing its death.

She's accused of poisoning and stabbing her boyfriend's German shepherd-Labrador mix named Mary. The dog died in June 2012.

Prosecutors say Janas kept a diary detailing how she tortured the dog. The criminal complaint says the entries include details of forcing the dog to drink bleach and swallow pain pills.

Prosecutors want to use the entries as evidence. But defense attorney John Wallace says the diary was obtained illegally and shouldn't be admissible.

Janas' trial is set to begin Jan. 21.
