"Diehards" say Packers give them a reason to sing

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- After suffering from Packer withdrawal, thanks to the bye-week, Packer fans are ready for Sunday, including "diehards" who go by "Elroy & the Diehards."

These diehard fans say it's easy to love the Packers, especially when the team gives them a reason to sing.

Tom "Elroy" Sumner and J.R. Hanson are the two players behind the virtual band Elroy and the Diehards.

"We consider ourselves diehard fans plus musicians, so we kind of put it all together," says Elroy.

Their latest CD is called "Packer Party."

"This is a followup to the one that was done years ago called 'We love Brett Farve and the 'Cheesehead Special'," says Elroy.

Elroy and J.R. say they wanted to give fans something to listen to support the Packs.

Packer Party is filled with originals and parodies for the biggest of Packer fans, like "Green & Gold Cups," a parody of Toby Keith's "Red Solo Cup." (scroll down to bottom for lyrics and link)

"There's a built in love for the Packers that if you can channel that through songs and music I think it made it a lot easier," says J.R. who also owns a mobile recording company called Studio 77 Productions.

J.R. says the CD is something Packer fans would enjoy at home, on the way to Lambeau Field or even at a tailgate party.

"Track three, we wanted to write a song about how it's kind of an escape being a Packer fan during the cold months, it's called 'Tailgate Holiday.'

Other creative titles like "Wisconsinites" is a parody off of "Israelites" and "Either You Is or You Ain't" is about being a diehard Packer fan.

"Let's face it, Lambeau Field history. There isn't anywhere else in the NFL. People in Wisconsin, there's just something about them," says J.R. "There's just something about the Packer players. They play with such heart, they play with authenticity. There's a reason why they become heroes to people and Packers are special because of their history because of the people in Wiconsin."

Elroy says diehards are the ones that keep coming back to the Pack, whether their favorite teams wins or loses.

"I think when you can love the Packers when they're not doing very well, I think that pretty much makes you a diehard Packer fan and when they start really doing it and getting it done, then you really start loving them even a little more," says Elroy.

Lyrics to "Green & Gold Cups:"

Now we don’t use those red receptacles, in Lambeau land that’s not respectable
We’re Packer fans and we’re biceptacle, we use green AND gold
One for the left hand, one for the right, we keep the party goin’ all day and night
When the Packers win that’s pure delight, that’s just the way we roll
Green and gold cups, I fill you up
Let’s have a party, a Packer party
I love you green and gold cups, I fill you up
Proceed to party, a Packer party
Now you can fill those cups up with beer or wine, whiskey, soda, or coffee’s fine
We get in the mood when it’s Packer time ‘cuz tailgate parties rock!
So let’s raise a cup to mighty Green Bay and there’s somethin’ else I’d like to say
I hope and pray every time they play -- Hey I got Packers stock!
Now I’ve seen you in blue and I’ve seen you in red
But it’s green and gold for this cheesehead
So just remember what I said: we’re diehards ‘til the end
Green and gold you’re the stars of the show
We see you all over wherever we go
And there’s something we all want you to know...
Thank you for being our friend
Green and gold cups, I fill you up
Let’s have a party, a Packer party
I love you green and gold cups, I fill you up
Proceed to party, a Packer party
