MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The Wisconsin Better Business Bureau is hosting special events at three locations across the state where people can shred sensitive documents to prevent identity theft.

There were more than 3,600 reported identity theft complaints in Wisconsin in 2013. Government documents or benefits were the most common type of identity theft, followed by credit card fraud.

The Better Business Bureau says people should shred old paychecks, bank receipts and medical bills to prevent identity theft.

An annual Federal Trade Commission report shows identity theft was one of the top consumer complaints last year.

Residents can bring up to three paper grocery bags of documents to shred at events on May 3 in Madison, May 10 in Milwaukee or on May 17 in Appleton.
