EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- It's the final dog days of summer and it was a perfect day for man's best friend to get out and hop in the pool for a good cause.

It was the last day at the Fairfax Pool before closing for the season and Monday was all about honoring military dogs.

For $10, anyone with a dog could bring their furry friend to the pool to swim, play fetch and have fun.

All proceeds go to the Highground Veterans Memorial Park in Neillsville for the Military Working Dog Tribute. The tribute is in recognition of dogs that have both served or are serving in the military.

"I thought it very very important to identify the heroes, not only the soldier heroes, but the scout dogs and dogs that serve, not only in the Vietnam war, but the Korean War and World War Two, and of course they're serving right now," said David Backstrom with the Highground.

Backstrom says they have raised $55,000 of the $190,000 needed for the tribute. They hope to raise the funds by 2015.
