CORNELL, Wis. (WEAU) -- At just 3 1/2 months old, Eve the puppy is spunkier than ever. She is full of life.

But a few weeks ago, someone had left her along with three other puppies on a street near Cornell during a snow storm. One of those dogs found was dead.

"This is just heartbreaking when I found out how these poor puppies were treated," said Carol Paus, who adopted Eve.

Paus has a soft-spot for rescue animals and was saddened to find out what had happened. She did not know if it was time for another dog after losing hers a few months ago.

But when she and Eve met on Christmas Eve, she says they were meant to be together.

"She came around the counter where I was and laid down at my feet and went to sleep, and that was when I knew it," she said.

Julie Begalkie is friends with Carol and also has a passion for dogs. She found the dog that died last week. She says it had been frozen during the storm.

"I felt so bad for it and I believe dogs deserve a decent burial, so I did pick it up and take it home," she said.

With six dogs of her own, she cannot imagine who would do something like this, or why.

"I mean that's a death sentence, it's so sad, they don't deserve that kind of treatment," she added.

And even though it is a situation that brought out the worst in someone, it also brought out the best in another. Eve is now safe in the arms of her savior.
