LA CROSSE, Wis. (WEAU) -- An area police department is asking for your help in finding whoever is responsible for knocking over dozens of headstones.
The damage is at Oak Grove Cemetery in La Crosse.
That’s across the street from the UW-L campus.
Oak Grove Cemetery’s executive director said it’s devastating to think that someone would do this.
“It’s in memory of those who have passed away, and it’s total disrespect of the memorials by those who did the vandalism. It’s very disheartening,” said Trish Grathen.
The La Crosse Police Department said it happened late Saturday night or early Sunday morning.
Lieutenant Patrick Hogan said someone driving by called them about seeing headstones knocked over.
“It’s disturbing and we are taking this seriously and hopefully we can catch the people that did this,” said Hogan.
Police said more than 50 headstones were knocked over.
Grathen said a few were damaged.
It took 6 cemetery workers 60 hours to get the headstones back up.
Work started Monday afternoon and finished Tuesday afternoon.
Police said it’s likely more than one person is responsible.
“With the weight of the headstones and the amount of damage that was done, we’re probably looking at multiple suspects in this,” said Hogan.
Grathen said the headstones weigh 500 to 1,000 pounds or more.
She also said the cemetery will be putting in security cameras to prevent this from happening again.
“It’s hard to believe that somebody would come through a cemetery and have total disregard, and just walk through the cemetery and start pushing monuments over,” said Grathen.
Lieutenant Hogan said the department could recommend that prosecutors file charges of criminal damage to property and trespassing in the case.
If you have any information, you’re asked to call the La Crosse Police Department or Crime Stoppers.
