Driver in deadly snowmobile crash arrested

BALSAM LAKE, Wis. (WEAU) - The driver of the snowmobile involved in a deadly crash on Wednesday is accused of being drunk when it happened.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office says Nicholas Krenz, 21, of St. Croix Falls was arrested at the scene of the crash for for operating a snowmobile while intoxicated. Investigators say two snowmobiles were going north on Bone Lake around 10 p.m. Wednesday. They were going between islands and the shore. That's when one of the snowmobiles hit an ice fishing shack. A 20-year-old woman who was riding with Krenz ended up with severe head injuries and died at the scene. A report to dispatch said that she was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Her name hasn't been released. Krenz wasn't hurt.

As of Thursday morning, no criminal charges had been filed in the case.
