WASHBURN, Wis. (WEAU) -- The victim of a drowning in northern Wisconsin Thursday has been identified as a Lake Hallie man.

On Friday, the Bayfield County Sheriff's Office identified the man as Laverne Fletty, 68. Crews responded to Basswood Lake, which is east of Superior, on Thursday morning. They had received a report of someone falling through the ice. The caller had tried to rescue his friend, who had fallen in, but couldn't. Rescue workers got to the lake, and the Fletty's body was recovered.

Investigators believe Fletty was crossing over a channel in the lake, and that there was an active current below.
