MENOMONIE, Wis. (WEAU)- Longtime sheriff and incumbent Democrat Dennis Smith will likely remain the Dunn County Sheriff.

Smith beat challenger Chris Kruse in the primary for the sheriff position Tuesday, with 56% of the vote.

There are no republican candidates for sheriff, which means Smith will run unopposed in the November election.

A union of Dunn County deputies declared no confidence toward Smith in a vote in July, but Smith says now it’s all about moving forward.

"We are all mature adults and we have a job to do and we should be professional and move forward. Our job is to take care of the public and the taxpayers of Dunn County and the people that visit Dunn County,” Smith said.

Smith has been the Dunn County Sheriff since 2001.
