EAGLE RIVER, Wis. (AP) -- Firefighters in Eagle River are hard at work building a huge ice castle, carrying on a popular tradition that dates back 80 years.

The Eagle River fire department helps build the castle using thousands of blocks of ice from a local lake.

Deputy fire Chief Jim Bonson says the effort is a way to repay the community for supporting the volunteer-based department. He says he knows it's a big draw to the community.

Town officials say people come from all over the Midwest to see the castle, which lights up at night. If the weather stays cold enough the castle should last a few months.

The castle features four towers that are about 30 feet tall.

The castle is near Highway 70 and Interstate 45.
