Early planning benefits spring planting

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Wisconsin agriculture officials say farmers should plan early to minimize risks and ensure growth in spring planting.

The state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection says farmers can protect themselves from unpredictable situations such as bad weather by purchasing and understanding insurance for their crops. And farmers should evaluate markets before locking in crop prices.

Before planting begins, farmers should get seed, fertilizer, fuel and other supplies, and those who rent land to plant should make sure rates and contract terms are set. The agency says lenders should provide adequate financial information for farmers to make decisions.

Officials say the department's farm center can help farmers make financial plans and mediate conflicts arising from negotiations.
