EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU)- ‘Tis the season to be jolly, and while many of you spent Christmas Day unwrapping gifts, a local couple has been hard at work the last couple of months giving the gift of clothes and house supplies to people who need it most.
Karla Highley and Keith Swedlund started A.R.K or Acts of Random Kindness to give basic items to people who need it most for free!
“We started out on Craigslist and someone was in need of some Halloween outfits,” Karla explained. “And we had some lying around and we donated them to her.”
A few searches on Craigslist and the thought of giving to those in need was all it took for something to grow from nothing for the Eau Claire couple.
“It went crazy after that we put an ad on Craigslist for A.R.K. and people started calling and donating their stuff and it’s been picking up now more than ever,” Highley said.
The couple says they take in donations of used items from others that would normally be thrown out or donated to thrift stores and give them to others.
“Their reaction is beyond words. They are very grateful for it and they just thank you,” Highley said.
Highley and Swedlund say if you want to donate something you can go to Craigslist and go to the community local news tab then you can find the A.R.K. page where you can donate items, get in contact with the couple and you can arrange a time and location to drop off or pick up items.
“I love to give anyway and I have a lot to give. We aren't looking to save the world or anything but as many people as we can help. We just totally enjoy it,” Highley said.
Keith and Karla say their dream has grown in the past four months from a space in their home, now they are close to outgrowing a small storage unit they rent.
They say in the future they hope to expand A.R.K. to a storefront and open up a food pantry.
