NEW INFORMATION: Eau Claire fire doesn’t appear suspicious

(WEAU) - Eau Claire firefighters say they're getting close to wrapping up the Cameron Street house fire investigation.

Crews say it doesn't appear anything is suspicious and they hope to have a cause determined early next week.

WEAU (Eau Claire) - A home is a total loss after a fire, but the man inside at the time made it out safely.

The fire happened shortly before 5 p.m. Thursday evening in the 1300-block of Cameron Street.

Investigators say the home is a total loss. They say the man inside heard the smoke alarms and saw smoke so he ran to a neighbor's house to get help. Crews say they still don't know the cause but it likely started in the basement and traveled up the walls and into the attic.
A family of three lives there. Family members told us the son who was inside did try to extinguish it himself but got out safely. No one was hurt. Crews say the family is staying with friends tonight.

Deputy Fire Chief Duane Grunst says, "that's the benefit of smoke detectors. It gave him the warning he needed and he got out safely."

Crews say the deep snow and older construction made the fire more difficult to fight. One firefighter hurt his knee working on the fire but was treated on scene.
