EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- Eau Claire welcomed its first baby of the new year just after midnight.

Mason Gurgel was born at 12:50 AM at Mayo Health Clinic System.
Mason weighed in at five pounds-13 ounces, and 18.5 inches.

His parents Bethany and Brad Gurgel of Bloomer say they were surprised to see him so soon, with her due date set for January 28th.

Bethany says everyone is healthy and the delivery went faster than her first child's, Kayla, two and a half years ago.

"It was pretty exciting. I guess we would have never have guessed that. he came early and was in a hurry to get here.
It's a fun surprise, it's a nice blessing from God, a good way to start off our year."

The Gurgels expect to leave the hospital by Friday. (1/3)
