EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) - An Eau Claire man, who told police he was mugged Thursday night, has admitted the story was false.
Eau Claire Police say the man originally told them that he'd been robbed at gunpoint of cash and his laptop near Water Street Thursday night, but the next day he admitted that he lied to cover up that he had broken his laptop.
Officers say the 20-year-old has been referred for possible charges.
Eau Claire Police say people shouldn't make false reports because it ties up their time and ability to respond to other cases.
