STRUM, Wis. (WEAU) The holiday season is all about the spirit of giving, which is why for this month's Schools Rule! contest winner, we were looking for a school that embodies that, and we found it at Eleva-Strum.
"I would describe her as an angel in disguise, she does everything for everyone," explains Principal Marty Kempf.
For Debbie Wright, school secretary at Eleva-Strum, the holiday season is especially busy.
About twelve years ago, she started a gift-drive, called "Christmas From the Heart." It's to help families in the district, who have fallen on hard times.
"Debbie does the majority of the work, she organizes it, she wraps the presents, she makes sure the families get their gifts in a timely manner before Christmas," explains Kempf.
Every year Debbie donates her time and money and acts as a "secret santa."
Each student receives a new outfit, winter gear, and a toy, along with a Christmas dinner for the family.
This year there's nearly thirty on her list.
"She has provided them the opportunity to have what everyone else has," says Kempf.
That's why all of us at WEAU and Gordy's County Market were thrilled to give Debbie's gift drive $3,000 Monday, courtesy of General Mills.
"This is going to be the biggest boost there ever was, for us, because last night I laid in bed thinking, how am I going to pay for all this stuff, I have left to buy and pay for," says Debbie, "when they say Christmas miracles, this is a Christmas miracle, I can't thank everybody enough, it's awesome."
