CHILTON, Wis. (AP) -- A former Appleton school district teacher's aide is accused of sexually assaulting a student.

Forty-four-year-old Laura Bates is accused of having sex with the 17-year-old boy at her home in Calumet County.

A shackled Bates walked into court without an attorney Tuesday. She faces four felony counts of sexual assault of a student by school staff.

Bates worked at Appleton West High School as a teacher's aide. District officials say Bates resigned Monday after being questioned by police. She had been employed by the district for three years.

Authorities say the relationship between the two turned sexual in November. Bates told authorities that she loved the boy.

Reports say Bates was released from jail on a $20,000 signature bond. She is due back in court Dec. 30.
