HEAT WAVE 2012: Farmers market wilts under heat

Sparta, Wis (WEAU)- The heat wave of 2012 is wilting away the prospects of a profitable summer for farmer's markets. But it’s not only in the fields that the farmers need to battle the heat.

Farmer’s markets are known for their fresh produce, but with the temperature's staying high vegetables are wilting in mere hours says Sparta Market Manager, Carol Schauf.

“Things wilt right down and aren’t fresh and our object is to bring the freshest,” said Schauf.

Some farmers have resorted to bringing their produce on ice to try to save it from the heat, but if it continues to be this hot there may not be much produce to bring to the market in the first place.
