Fred Maphis is charged with one count of leaving a loaded firearm near a child and obstructing an officer.
JACKSON COUNTY, Wis. (WEAU)-- The father of a 6-year-old and a 4-year-old involved in a shooting in Jackson County last month is now charged.
According to the criminal complaint, the 6-year-old boy shot the 4-year-old girl in the face August 30th. The boy told officers he found the gun in the house, accidentally dropped it, and it fired at the girl.
The complaint says the boy later admitted that he did not drop it and says his father, 48-year-old Fred Maphis, told him to lie about what happened.
The boy says he pointed the gun and was aiming past his sister's shoulder but got too close to her face.
The girl was taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
