MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Court filings show a judge overseeing a secret investigation into possible illegal campaign coordination between conservative groups and recall campaigns in 2011 and 2012 said he doesn't think the activities in question were prohibited.
Judge Gregory Peterson's remarks were part of a redacted filing that the website Wisconsin Reporter was able to view after pasting the hidden sections into another word processing program. The Associated Press was able to replicate the process Friday.
The filings confirm the probe has centered on campaign coordination. They go on to note that Peterson quashed five subpoenas in the probe after concluding such coordination isn't illegal.
Prosecutors leading the probe have asked a state appeals court to review Peterson's decision.
