The Eau Claire city council has approved a renovation plan for Owen Park.

The new plan includes many upgrades in the area of handicap accessibility as well as new restrooms, the removal of trees and addition of native grass planted along the river.

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- The city of Eau Claire hosted a meeting Wednesday night to hear what final plan the public wants for the renovations at Owen Park.

Previous public hearings whittled the options down to a plan that will include a new park shelter with handicap accessible bathrooms.

People got to weigh in on which variation of the plan they prefer.

Differences include whether to expand the parking lot and which route a new path should go to the seating area in front of the band shell.

The architect who worked on the design says the public input played a big role in the final design
"It’s been very helpful. 95 percent of the ideas were from the community and the community,” says architect Dennis Blau of Cedar Corporation.

Owen Park will close in October for a cleanup project.

Crews will be removing contaminated soil left over from the days when it was a gas plant back in the late 1800's.
