Fire breaks out at Bloomer Hospital

Mayo Clinic Health System cancelled the remainder of its clinical appointments for the day. The Emergency Department remained open.

BLOOMER, Wis. (WEAU)-- A fire caused heavy damage to part of Mayo Clinic Health System, Chippewa Valley in Bloomer Friday.

Bloomer Fire Chief, Brian Bleskacek says it happened around noon in the administrative wing, which was the old Blue Diamond Clinic. He says a worker was welding and the hot embers ignited some combustible materials. The administrative building has heavy smoke, fire, and water damage. The hospital part was not affected.

A spokesperson for Mayo Clinic Health System says the fire happened away from patient care areas but 12 patients were temporarily moved to another part of the building until the smoke dissipated.

“We appreciated the quick response of our staff and local emergency personnel, and are thankful no one was harmed in the incident,” said Ed Wittrock, site administrator for Mayo Clinic Health System.

Bloomer fire, New Auburn Fire, police and EMT personnel responded. Crews had the fire out within a couple of hours and no one was hurt.
