Woman dies after officers try saving her from burning home

ROBERTS, Wis. (ROBERTS POLICE DEPARTMENT NEWS RELEASE) -- UPDATE: On January 7, 2014 at approximately 6:30PM the Roberts Police Department responded to a House Fire at 61 Frank St in the Village of Roberts.

Officer Todd Shafer of the Roberts Police Department and Trooper Robert Unruh of the Wisconsin State Patrol located a female victim within the home, and were able to remove the victim from the home.

The victim Identified as 66 year old Roberta Eastman was transported to Hudson Hospital by EMS with life threatening injuries. Eastman was transferred to Regions Hospital, but early this morning did succumb to her injuries.

Chief Daniel Burgess of the Roberts Police Department stated, “My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Roberta at this difficult time”.

The fire remains under investigation; however foul play is not suspected. The Wisconsin State Fire Marshall is conducting the cause and origin investigation. It is believed a lit cigarette may have contributed to the fire.

Chief Burgess also stated “ I would like to commend the heroic acts of Officer Shafer and Trooper Unruh along with the excellent work by EMS and Fire Personnel in this case.”

Roberts Police were assisted by the Wisconsin State Patrol and the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Department. Roberts – Warren Fire Department was assisted on scene by the United Fire, Baldwin and Hammond Stations, River Falls Fire and New Richmond EMS.
