The Vernon County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Viola Fire Department, Kickapoo Valley Rescue, Readstown, Lafarge and Tri-State Ambulance Services. The accident remains under investigation.
VIROQUA, Wis. (VERNON COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE NEWS RELEASE) -- Sheriff John B. Spears reports a two vehicle accident on October 10, 2013 at 12:45 p.m. The crash occurred at the intersection of State Highway 56 and County Highway SS in the Town of Liberty. Rudolf R. Ilich, age 53 and his wife Tracey L. Ilich, age 42 both of Viola, WI were traveling eastbound on State Highway 56. A westbound vehicle being operated by Jenny M. Jonquist, age 28 of Richland Center began to negotiate the left turn onto County Highway SS. Jonquist reports that her one year son who was in the backseat began to cry. Jonquist turned her head momentarily to check on her son and did not see Ilich’s vehicle. Ilich tried to avoid the crash and swerved to the right. Both vehicles struck head on in the eastbound lane. Ilich’s vehicle spun and came to rest in the eastbound lane. Jonquist’s vehicle spun and came to rest in the eastbound ditch. Jenny Jonquist and both her children ages one and four became entrapped inside their vehicle. Viola Fire Department arrived on scene and extracted Jonquist and her children.
All five occupants involved in the crash were transported to Vernon Memorial Hospital. Rudolf and Tracey Ilich were treated and released. Jenny and her four year old daughter were later transferred to Gunderson Health System in Lacrosse with serious injuries. Jenny’s one year old son was treated and released to family members.
Both children were in child safety seats and seat belted in the backseat. Jonquist and the Ilich’s were all wearing their seat belts.
