NEW INFORMATION: Landlord of apartment where floor collapsed fined

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WEAU) -- The owner of the apartment in La Crosse that collapsed is now being fined.

Chief inspector David Reinhard says the building at 135 6th Street South had 1st and 2nd code violations, one of them being failure to register the property as a rental.

The 2nd floor of the apartment complex collapsed on September 22 during a party. According to initial reports, up to 50 people were in the building that night, with three people treated at the hospital.

Nate Brooks, who owns River City Rentals, will be fined $150 plus a court cost of $90, making it a total of $240.

The city of La Crosse requires landlords to register their properties so that they can make sure building are also up to code.

Crews were called shortly after 11pm Saturday night to 135 6th Street South.

Multiple units responded following initial word up to 50 people were inside at the time.

Compounding the problem was a gas leak which was quickly shut off and gas emissions monitored for safety reasons.

Three people were treated at the scene and then transported to GLMC.

Fire crews searched the apartment building and found no other victims.

A 30x30 area of the 2nd floor collapsed.

The building has now been condemned by the City Of La Crosse Building Inspection team.
